Moving to San Diego County: A First-30-Days Checklist

A short, practical checklist for the first month in a new San Diego County home, with a link to each official page.

MOVING GUIDE · OCTOBER 2026

Getting the keys is the finish line of the buying process and the starting line of a to-do list. Here is a simple order to work through, with the official page for each step.

Before you move

  • Forward your mail. The USPS change-of-address page lets you submit a change online. USPS says to allow at least 7 to 10 business days for it to take effect, so start early.
  • Line up your utilities. Ask the seller or your agent which companies serve the address. Many San Diego County addresses are served by San Diego Gas & Electric, and water, trash and internet depend on the street and city.

In the first few weeks

  • Update your address with the DMV. The California DMV is where you update your driver license, ID and vehicle registration. Check its page for the current deadlines.
  • Check your voter registration. The state's register to vote site lets you register or check your existing registration.
  • Find your schools. The San Diego County Office of Education has a School Finder on its home page. Boundaries and enrollment steps are set by each district, so confirm with the district itself.
  • File the Homeowners' Exemption. The County Assessor says the Homeowners' Exemption is free to file, is a one-time filing for as long as the home is your primary residence, and appears on your tax bill as a $7,000 reduction in assessed value. It is your responsibility to apply.

Settling in

  • Try your neighborhood. Pick a park, a coffee spot and a weekend plan from the Best Spots page and the fall and holiday events guide.
  • Save the numbers you will want. Your lender, insurer, utilities and Rudy's number, (619) 392-6714, in one place.

This is a general checklist, not legal, tax or insurance advice. Rules, forms and fees change, so use each organization's own page for the current details.

Moving soon and want a plan for the home search itself? The four-question Home Strategy Quiz takes about a minute, and Rudy will follow up personally.
